Domestic Singer Sewing Machines

Singer was renowned for being the largest manufacturer of both domestic and industrial sewing machine models. Industrial sewing machines are not just very robust, but every aspect of them is optimised for doing a very limited number of tasks perfectly. By contrast, the design of domestic models is a very complex balance of many compromises, so that they will perform an impressively wide range of tasks all reasonably well, but without the absolute perfection of an industrial fine tuned for just one task.

This section of our site is focused on being an information resource for people wanting to know more about domestic Singer sewing machines and their accessories. In particular it is aimed at the ever increasing number of more discerning machinists who are fed up with their modern ‘plastic’ machines and want to return to an era when they were in control, rather than an electronic chip hidden inside the machine itself.  To a time when a beautiful black and gold icon provided a fully adjustable stitch, tension which was easy to adjust and calibrate, and when any old thread could be used top or bottom, whether it matched or not, was cotton or polyester, or even one of each.

Please use the menu system and in-page links to fully explore this section of our site, which is dedicated to the Singer domestic models made between about 1865 and 1970.

Alternatively if your interest lies in the Featherweight models, toy sewing machines, vintage machines of other makes, or industrial models, then please be sure to explore the other sections of our site as detailed below :-
